World Triathlon’s new transgender rules echo Steam Donkey Racing’s inclusive approach

World Triathlon has adopted new regulations in order to facilitate the participation of Transgender athletes, and we’re excited to see that their approach is in lockstep with policies we introduced back in 2023.

World Triathlon, which presumably has access to greater resources than a bunch of donkeys, referenced expert opinions and the most current medical, scientific and legal writings in their announcement, and we support them in the belief that their approach strikes a reasonable balance between fairness and inclusivity.

While the World Triathlon regulations are very granular at the Elite level, locally, at the provincial level, eligibility conditions to compete in the Age-Group Female and in the Age-Group Open categories include:

  • To be eligible to compete in the Female category of the Age-Group competitions, athletes must be Assigned Female at Birth not transitioning to male.
  • There is no gender limitation to compete in the Open category of the Age-Group competitions.
  • Athletes must compete in the same category (Female or Open) throughout the whole calendar year

These Regulations have come into effect on January 1, 2025 and can be viewed in full HERE.

In 2023, Steam Donkey Racing changed its gender categories at Fit Chiropractic Dodge City X to Female and Open, ensuring that all participants have a place to feel welcome at our event. We wholeheartedly value inclusivity and diversity and welcome everybody to participate at our events!
